On December 2nd, 2020, H.E. RAO Hongwei paid a visit to FAWE Girls' School in Kigali and donated school furniture including 333 sets of desk and chair to the education institution. The donation function was attended by Ms Pauline Umwali, Executive Administrator of Gasabo district.
Making his remarks during the handover of furniture, Amb. Rao recalled the visit of Professor PENG Liyuan to the school during President XI Jinping's state visit in July 2018, which opened a new chapter of cooperation between the Chinese Embassy and FAWE school. A teaching post for Chinese language was established here with support from the Confucius Institute. Education has become a focus of the Chinese Embassy for a long time when efforts are made to promote Rwanda's progress. In this tough period of Covid-19, more attention should be paid for girls' education. Amb. Rao encouraged the girls to study hard, understand their mission to build the country, and become goodwill ambassadors of China-Rwanda friendship.
Sister Eugenia Kairaba, head teacher at the school, thanked the Embassy for its consistent support. To obey the government's anti-Covid measures of social distancing, the school was in urgent need of more furniture for students. Having written a letter of request to the Chinese ambassador, she was deeply moved that the Embassy immediately promised to provide financial support. Through consultation with the Embassy, the school decided to purchase all these desks and chairs from local carpenters, making a contribution to Rwanda's efforts to fight the coronavirus and restart the economy.
Amb. Rao and his colleagues were given a tour of the school by the head teacher. While visiting computer room and library among other infrastructures, they were glad to learn that the Embassy's donation in last two years including Chinese cultural books and ICT equipment had facilitated students' study. After the tour, Chinese learners at the school sang a song for the visitors with impressive pronunciation of Chinese language.
