H.E. RAO Hongwei Held Reception Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC

On September 20th 2019, H.E. RAO Hongwei, Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, held a reception celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Mr. Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of State in Charge of East African Community attended the event as the guest of honor. Over 300 guests from Rwandan government, political parties, parliament, military, business and academy community, media circles, diplomatic corps, Chinese companies and institutes attended. Among them were General Albert Murasira, Minister of Defence, Patrick Ndimubanzi, Minister of State in Charge of Primary Healthcare, Dr. Jean Paul Kimonyo, Head of strategic policy unit of the President Office.

In his speech, H.E. Ambassador RAO Hongwei reviewed the remarkable achievements China had made during the past 70 years since 1949. He said that the Chinese people were closer than ever before to realizing the goal of national rejuvenation. The Chinese nation had achieved leapfrogging development from standing up, growing rich to a strong nation. As a major country as well as the biggest developing country, China had set an example by demonstrating the sense of responsibility and contributing more to world peace and development. China was committed to a community with a shared future for mankind through Belt and Road initiative, and was more than willing to share development opportunities with the rest of the world, especially African countries like Rwanda.

Ambassador RAO said that this year also marked the 25th anniversary of Rwandan Liberation. Since Rwanda gained its liberation on July 4 1994, under the leadership of President Kagame, the country has recorded successes in socio-economic development. It had been one of the fastest growing economies in Africa and had made remarkable progress in human development, safety, doing business environment, government transparency and women empowerment. As Rwanda's partner, friend and brother, the Chinese people were heartened to see these accomplishments.

Ambassador RAO said that during the past 48 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Rwanda, both sides had treated each other as equals with sincerity and friendship. The two countries enjoyed solid political mutual trust and support on issues concerning each other's interests. Practical cooperation had been thriving through various joint projects ranging from infrastructure, agriculture, light manufacturing, mining, to health, digitalization and human resource. Chinese President Xi Jinping's historic visit to Rwanda in July, 2018 had ushered the bilateral relations into a new era. Both sides would jointly promote the implementation of the consensus reached by the two Heads of State and outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit and build the China-Rwanda community of a shared future.

On behalf of President Paul Kagame, the Rwandan government and people, Mr. Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of state in Charge of East African Community of the Rwandan Foreign Ministry, conveyed warm congratulations to the Chinese government and people for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He commended the great achievements made by the Chinese people since 1949 and particularly in the last 4 decades. He said, under the leadership of the Communist Party, China had now become the second largest economy in the world, possessing the largest trade volume of tangible goods and the largest foreign exchange reserves. China contributed to more than 30% to the world economic growth annually. 700 million Chinese people were lifted out of poverty, and by so impacted the people worldwide and the countries in Africa inclusive. China was currently the global manufacturing hub and was growing to new world innovation hub. Chinese people was undertaking measures to achieve the modern socialist state by 2049 as the second millennium targets. Rwanda congratulated China for the "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era" which gave clear strategies for achieving the vision of rejuvenating the great country.

Mr. Nduhungirehe said, the "Belt and Road Initiative" had been appreciated by many countries including Africa over the past 6 years since its launching. The initiative was a welcome opportunity that would boost access to the landlocked countries which catalyzing economic development and regional integration. The project provided rare opportunity to address some of the serious constraints to Rwanda's and Africa's sustainable economic transformation. China Rwanda bilateral relations had enjoyed sustainable development over the past 5 decades. A lot had been achieved with the joint efforts of the two governments. Rwanda was committed to further advancing the bilateral ties for common purpose and mutual benefit.

During the reception, the Chinese Embassy compound, decorated with colorful lights and ribbons, was filled with festive atmosphere. The "beautiful China" photo exhibition displayed. Chinese and Rwanda Kung-fu players, volunteers from the Confucius institute, Rwandan students and the Rwanda ballet troupe staged wonderful cultural performances. Together with the Chinese people, the guests wished the Chinese nation prosperity and the China-Rwanda friendship forever.
