Chinese Embassy Held a Reception Celebrating the Chinese New Year 2020

On January 16th 2020, Chinese Embassy in Rwanda held a reception celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rat. More than 200 invitees from the Rwandan government, political parties, parliament, military, business and academy communities, media circles, diplomatic corps, Chinese companies and institutes attended.


Ambassador RAO Hongwei introduced in his speech the auspicious cultural connotations of the Chinese lunar New Year of the Rat, and extended good wishes to the guests. He said that the year 2019 witnessed the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. China's achievements in modernizing the system and capacity for governance, China's resolve and courage to deepen reform and opening-up are applauded worldwide. China's GDP of 2019 is close to 100 trillion yuan with the per capita figure reaching the level of 10,000 US dollars. Significant breakthroughs have been achieved from the efforts and sweat of the Chinese people.


As to China-Rwanda relations in 2019, there are so many events worth celebrating. The cooperation between Rwanda and China has been running at a high level. The bilateral exchanges at different levels bring China-Rwanda friendly ties and mutual trust to a new height and give a strong boost to the all-round development of China-Africa relations. The training team from the Chinese People's Liberation Army made contributions to the successful military parade at the 25th anniversary of Rwanda Liberation Day. More than 100 Chinese mining experts are in Rwanda to implement the Rwandan Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Assessment Project. RwandAir launched its maiden directly flight between Kigali and Guangzhou. China and Rwanda, the first ever book in history about China and Rwanda written by Rwandan people was published. 


Ambassador RAO said, the year 2020 is of great significance for China-Africa and China-Rwanda relations. China is determined to walk along the road of peaceful development and will resolutely promote peace and common development with African brothers like Rwanda. The year 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of FOCAC, while Rwanda has come to a critical stage in its transformation and development. In the Year of the Rat, China will work with Rwanda for higher quality and efficiency of our practical cooperation, so that together we could deliver greater benefits to our two peoples and set a fine example of mutually beneficial cooperation between developing countries.


Hon. Rosemary Mbabazi, Rwandan Minister of Youth and Culture, attended the reception and made her remarks as Guest of Honor. She conveyed all the best wishes and congratulations from His Excellency President Paul KAGAME, the Government and the People of Rwanda, to the Government and friendly People of China. Hon. Mbabazi said, the bilateral relations are excellent today following the Chinese President H.E. XI Jinping's first ever official visit to Rwanda in July 2018. Last year, the first Seminar on China Human Resources Development Training Programs took place in Kigali. A delegation from Zhejiang province, led by the Governor Mr YUAN Jiajun, visited Rwanda, promotes the bilateral cooperation in various areas. She wished the bonds between the two countries and the two peoples continue to flourish in the new year.


A picture exhibition about development and progress of human rights in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at the reception attracted invitees, who spoke highly of China's achievements in human rights. The New Times, RTV, Kigali Today among other media covered the event.
